The Keys to Successful Tree Trimming and Pruning

Small tree trimming and pruning jobs can be easily done by the average homeowner, as long as they have the proper tools and education. Larger jobs can become more dangerous and should always be handled by an expert. Read through some of our tree trimming tips and tricks below:

Why Does My Tree Need to Be Trimmed?

  • To remove diseased or storm-damaged branches
  • Encourages new growth and better air circulation
  • To remove obstructing lower branches
  • To give it a shape or design
  • To reduce its height

General Tree Trimming Tips

  • It’s best to trim trees during their dormant season (late winter/early spring)
  • Be aware of the branch’s size: less than 5 cm is safe, anything over 10 cm should be done by a professional
  • Only trim branches that have weak, V-shaped, narrow angles
  • Pruning is easier when the branches are young
  • Don’t trim branches too close or too long

Use the ⅓ and ¼ Rules of Pruning

  • Never remove more than ¼ of a tree’s crown in any season
  • Main side branches should be at least ⅓ smaller than the trunk
  • For deciduous trees, don’t prune more than ⅓ of the tree’s height
  • Try to encourage side branches that form angles that are ⅓ off the tree’s vertical
